Dental Hygiene

Dental Hygiene

We had a visit from the  Dental Nurse regarding our dental hygiene and what we can do to cut down on the amount of damage we are doing to our teeth.

WARNING - some very unpleasant photographs, but these are what could happen to our own teeth if we don't look after them.

After our informative input, Primary 5 (and Mrs Borzacchiello) are going to make a huge effort to cut down on our sugary snacks that we have at playtime.   A small treat after a meal is the best time to eat sugar so we are aiming to have a sugar-free snack each day.  Some examples are:

a piece of fruit
breadsticks
natural yoghurt
plain rice cakes
carrot sticks
cheese
crackers

Help support your child in their quest for healthy teeth!

French Day at St. Mary's!

French Day at St. Mary's

On Wednesday 14th March, all pupils came to school wearing French inspired clothing and took part in a wide variety of learning activities.  Each class split in to groups and they then travelled to different staff to take part in French-related tasks.

Here are the activities P4 - P7 experienced:
  • Kahoot quiz on French culture from Miss McShannon and Mrs McGrath
  • STEM task building a French landmark with Mr McColgan
  • Singing French songs with Miss McCluskey
  • A range of French vocabulary games with Miss Brown
  • Learning about the Eiffel Tower with Mrs Clark
When the pupils came to my room, they were introduced to the work of Henri Matisse.  We watched a quick video about his life, then discussed his paper collage work.  We evaluated his pictures and looked at how we could try to use this style to create work of our own.
This is the video we observed.

Here are some of the images that we evaluated:

Icarus
The Sadness of the King

The Snail
The Parakeet and The Mermaid

Below are some photographs of the pupils hard at work.  We also invited parents in to become involved in the children's learning and I was overwhelmed at the turnout in Primary 5.  Huge thank you to all that came along today - hope you enjoyed your art lesson!

Earth Hour

Earth Hour

Primary 5 are being responsible citizens through their Earth Hour themed learning.  We are looking at our use of electricity and how this is affecting our planet.  The children are currently campaigning to raise awareness of this event and trying to spread the news throughout the school and the local area.

The main even takes place on Saturday 24th March and 8.30pm - 9.30pm GMT.  All over the world families, businesses and even landmarks will switch off power where possible to do their bit for our planet.  Use this hour to #connect2earth, which is this year's theme.

If you want to find out more about what Earth Hour is or, even better, if you want to sign up for this event, please go to the Earth Hour website.

Go on - help save our Earth!

Science Week

Science Week - March 2018

All of St. Mary's took part in Science Week from Monday 5th to Friday 9th March.  As well as completing various experiments in class, each stage were lucky enough to have an input from Generation Science.

Primary 5 participated in Power From The People on Tuesday afternoon.  We met Callen and Heather who introduced us to how electricity works.  We are now experts in atoms, particles, electrons, circuits and capacitors!

To round off our learning, each group were tasked with producing enough electricity to power a Hexbug,  The more electricity we generated, the faster and more powerful our Hexbugs moved.  As you can see, we had great fun!
